If you find errors in the event logs regarding Windows Font Cache Service not starting:

I think the problem was in the Windows Font Cache Service. It was not started and there was always an error about it when she crashed. I think it crashes when Excel needs to use this service.

The service would not start because an item was missing in the registry.

In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost there is an entry called LocalService.

If you edit that item you should see a bunch of things including FontCache.

If FontCache is missing the service will not start.

I typed it back in and saved the reg key. Then had her reboot and the service started.

Hopefully that is it but that doesn't explain why the item was missing in the registry in the first place. If it keeps happening that would be hard to explain.
