Oaknet Physical Connection

Oakland County has dedicated fiber that has been run to all CVT’s in Oakland County.  It is referred to as OakNet.   The fiber comes into the Communications Room at City Hall, then another string of fiber has been run from City Hall to Fire Station 1 in the old dispatch switch room.  City Hall and Station 1 are directly connected via fiber to Oaknet.  Oaknet is now primarily used for the City’s secure connection to CLEMIS at the Fire Department.

In the Communications Room at City Hall, the fiber termination is in the upper left corner of the room and is connected to a small black transceiver that converts the fiber to copper.   Ethernet cable out of the transceiver is ultimately routed through the cable tray, over to the data center, and into port 12 on the firewall.

At Fire Station 1, the fiber is terminated in the old dispatch switch room and is connected to another small black transceiver.

There is a single computer directly connected to Oaknet at Station 1 for the County CAD.  The other Fire Station computers on Oaknet are using a NAT’d connection through our city network.  If our city connection to Oaknet goes down for some reason, the direct fiber connection should still be ok.  This is the DR plan for continuity at Fire should our network be down.

Transceiver Information

Should the transceivers need to be replaced, it needs to be single mode fiber  to gigabit ethernet.  Not multi mode fiber.  No configuration needs to be done on the transceivers.
