Free software from MTU.EDU used by DPS/Engineering

www.roadsoft.org

Initial request by Engineering to use the software - May 2012

Main installation performed by Kevin on May 15, 2012

Database is on Ricky

Laptop Data Collection (LDC) software installed on loaner laptop when needed; see Pool Laptop list

User Account Info

When you create a new user account it will automatically set the password to the same as the user name. User should be able to change the password, but it doesn’t always work.

Admin account (see MIS password keeper)

Power users - M. Casey, C. Shepard, K. Depp

User management is under Tools > User Options

Database Info

Database installed on Ricky (moved from Trapper in 2019)

Database name = Roadsoft

Initial database size after install was approx 60MB

Nightly backup via scheduled task

Manual Backup of Database:

If you need to run a backup of the database to provide to Roadsoft for tech support, you will need to be logged in to Roadsoft as an admin.  Click Tools ? Backup Roadsoft Database.  It will ask you for the SQL Server username and password (check Bitwarden for SQL SA Account on RICKY). For the Backup File, use the default location on Ricky (you should see a bunch of other Roadsoft backups there).

Move Database Instructions

If you need to move the Roadsoft database to a new server or a new SQL instance, do the move using the Roadsoft application.

Log in using the admin account  and under tools, backup database.

Create the new SQL Server database and folders for the .mdf and .ldf files

Move the backup you created to the backup folder on the new server

Close Roadsoft and open the login screen.

From the login screen select 'Option' and 'Restore Database' and select the new location and the backup file.

From the login screen select 'Option' and 'Change Server/Database' and point to the new database. (This last step needs to be done on all computers using Roadsoft)

Basic Install Instructions

NOTE: On Windows 10 PCs and above, must be logged in as an administrative user to complete the install if any additional components need to be downloaded, such as Visual C++.

G:\install\mistools\roadsoft

Look for the latest version of the software

Start RoadSoft, on the login form, click the options button and choose Change Server/Database. Browse to the server* Ricky and with the database RoadSoft displayed in the dialog box click "Connect" (*To get to Ricky, just type ricky (no slashes) and ROADSOFT will pop up in the database field).

On the next screen login as the user to test it.

Laptop Data Collector (LDC)

The Laptop Data Collector (LDC) installer is located on the G: drive under Roadsoft, but always check the website for the latest version when the laptop is requested by DPS.

Install or update on the pool laptop designated for this use (check Pool Laptop List).

DPS staff typically borrow the laptop in the spring and drive the city for approximately a month updating data.

MIS installs or updates the LDC software, but DPS is responsible for providing the data needed, typically via a USB flash drive.

They may need a backup of the data prior to this data collection, but that is up to them to determine.

Old Install Instructions-

Do not think these are valid anymore, but not deleting them yet.

Here are some basic instructions on setting up RoadSoft for the first time:

1) Install SQL Server Express on a machine that will act as the server. Installation can be found here: http://roadsoft.org/releases/roadsoft-sql-express-database-server

2) Install RoadSoft on a client machine. The installation can be found here: http://updates.trans.mtu.edu/Roadsoft/Setup/SetupRoadsoft7.5.4.exe

3) On the client machine with RoadSoft installed, click this link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22335097/FWVersionInfo.ini

This is stored in G:\install\mistools\roadsoft

Right-click on the file that you see (you should see [FWInfo]...JurisdictionName=RochesterHills) and choose SaveAs. Save the file with the name FWVersionInfo.ini into a place where you will be able to browse for it later in RoadSoft.

4) Run RoadSoft and on the login form, click the options button. Choose Create New Database, then browse for the server (name will be servername\TDG2008R2) and create the RoadSoft database on that SQL server instance. Login into RoadSoft as admin user and continue. It will eventually prompt you to download the Framework Data. Initially, you will need to browse for the file (FWVersionInfo.ini) that was saved in step 3. Eventually, the Framework data for Rochester Hills will be downloaded from the cloud and you will see the initial map for your jurisdiction.

Update History

7/17/20 SO- Updated install directions for clarification on finding server and latest version number.

2019 - Ver 2019.6.2 installed for all users; Laptop Data Collector (LCD) Ver. 2019.6 installed on Pool Laptop DP1445*

  * Since they only use the LCD version once a year, it was determined that it could live on a pool laptop.

March 2017 - Ver 2017.3

03/07/2013 KK, Installed Ver 7.5.4 on all four PC's and installed the Laptop Data Collector (LCD) on DP0961 laptop.
